Spotlight on Asthma

Asthma - What is it and how can it be treated?

Asthma is characterised by episodic attacks of wheezing and breathlessness, whereby the airways of the lungs are constricted by muscular spasm surrounding the bronchi (small airways in the lungs). There is tightness in the chest which develops before the wheezing. The difficulty with respiration and wheezing is generally worse on expiration, but an individual assessment would need to determine between the effects of both inspiration and expiration on the patient. As the wheezing develops there is breathlessness.Often sticky mucus or phlegm is produced. The severity of attacks are variable with some being mild with only wheezing whilst others develop with severe breathlessness.

According to Dr Stephen Gascoigne there is a rapid pulse which can be quite high. At a level of 120 beats per minute it indicates a severe attack and at 140 per minute a life threatening situation. On average 1,500 people die from asthma each year in the UK alone and at least a third of those are under the age of 65.

Asthma is divided conventionally into extrinsic and intrinsic types. Extrinsic asthma is usually first seen in childhood and there is often a family history of allergies. Worryingly the UK has the highest prevalence of severe wheeze in children aged 13-14 years worldwide. The spasms that characterize an acute attack are not the cause of the disorder, but a result of chronic inflammation and hypersensitivity of the airways to certain stimuli. An attack may be triggered if a susceptible individual is exposed to an allergen or irritants. Common asthma provoking allergens include animal dander, chemicals, drugs, dust mites, environmental pollutants, feathers, food additives such as sulphites, fumes, mould, and tobacco smoke, but any kind of allergen can precipitate an asthma attack in a susceptible individual. This "atopic" group may also have other conditions such as eczema, hay fever or migraine

The intrinsic asthma, a less common form of the disease, generally appears during adulthood and is often associated with other respiratory diseases such as bronchitis or sinusitis, and tends to appear during upper respiratory viral infections. This group are usually vulnerable to changes in weather, exercise, emotional stress, and other factors relating to inner feelings.

Asthma specialists speculate that rising levels of environmental pollution lead to a higher incidence of asthma. Within a generation in the industrialised West we have gone from dealing with up to 300 chemicals daily, absorbed through the skin, the air we breathe and ingested, to some 30,000 on a daily basis, (asthma is uncommon in developing countries). In the last decade, the number of Americans with asthma has increased by one third.

With increased deterioration in the immune system is it any wonder that here in the UK alone 8 million people have been diagnosed with asthma. Respiratory disease is the most common illness responsible for an emergency admission to hospital. Asthma epidemics related to atmospheric contamination, in which dust and chemical particulate matter are abundant, and on the increase, especially within enclosed environments.

The main aim in conventional medicine is to prevent wheezing to minimise long-term lung damage. Therefore, medical practitioners are keen to use treatments regularly and long-term in an attempt to achieve this result. Dr Gascoigne states that corticosteroids are increasingly likely to be used as a first choice. The estimated cost of treatment to the NHS is a staggering �850 million per year.

Conventional treatments in order of severity include:

Bronchodilators as inhalers or oral


Sodium cromoglycate


Corticosteroids inhaled, or oral


Bronchodilator as nebulised or injected


Corticosteroid as injected.

According to the National Asthma Campaign many people are turning to complementary medicine and various therapies to seek relief. A good example of a complementary therapy is Buteyko a breathing technique developed by the Russian scientist Konstantin Buteyko. His theory that asthma is caused by hyperventilation led him to devise a system of breathing exercises designed to reduce breathing rate and depth. Similarly, pranayama yoga has been used to treat asthma in eastern societies for centuries. Preliminary research suggests that Buteyko improved asthma symptoms, and the respondents on the program were able to cut their use of their reliever inhalers by up to two puffs a day.

Acupuncture may also prove helpful in addition to homoeopathy, and nutritional counseling.

On a nutritional note, many asthmatics find it beneficial to avoid mucus and phlegm forming foods either on a temporary or permanent basis. Also eliminate any yeast and fungal infections, as Candida, (a type of yeast which can mutate to the fungal version called Candida Albicans), loves warm moist places such as the lungs.

Asthma Treatment and You - Overcome Your Asthma Naturally

From my very first Asthma attack at the age of seven till my last one about 5 years ago, Asthma (along with acne in my teenage and early adult years) had been a health problem that I had to deal with. Needless to say, those were some depressing years.

Depressing because I had been told my doctors, family and friends that there wasn't a cure for Asthma, heck my pastor even went as far as to say that along with my acne, "in every thing give thanks for this is the will of God for you. . ."

Alas, they were all wrong.

Asthma can be cured and naturally at that. My belief is if it worked for me, it can definitely work for anyone plagued by this disease.

I was so vulnerable to this respiratory disorder that even the slightest friendly pat on the back would ignite an asthma attack characterized by wheezes, gasps, and cough spells, that could last as long as a week.

First of all, let's start with its definition.

Abstinence from the products above is a must and a fact that has been in effect in several asthma treatment programs aimed at correcting respiratory health such as the "Breath Retaining Program For Asthmatics" developed by the Russian, Dr. Buteyko. Within weeks of adhering to this advice, many chronic asthmatics have been able to give up the use of Ventolin inhalers.

Therefore, the first step in achieving a successful asthma treatment will simply be to make a change in your diet by avoiding mucus forming foods and adhering to consuming their direct opposites, the body healing/alkaline forming foods. These include Seasonal, Organic Fruits, Roots and Leafy Vegetables and very little nuts.

It may sound boring or unrealistic but, if curing your asthma (or any disease or condition you may have as a matter of fact) is your goal, this sacrifice is well worth it. Besides, with so many fruits and vegetables to choose from, abstinence from Acid-forming foods shouldn't be difficult at all.

Therefore, what is eaten during these respective periods must be harmonious with the natural processes. That said a suggested menu plan will be

1. Fresh squeezed Fruit Juice for breakfast.

2. A mono-meal of a juicy, seasonal fruit for lunch

3. A fresh home-made salad, steamed root and/or leafy vegetables or a wise combination of all three for dinner.

Also, do not consume liquids of any kind with your meals as this practice hinders digestion by diluting the juices in the stomach. This brings about a constriction of the diaphragm, inhibiting its natural motions needed for respiration. If there is a natural thirst (as with an alkaline forming diet, thirst is minimal as an added benefit) drink only enough to quench your desire with pure distilled water at least an hour before or after your meals and certainly 2 hours at least before going to bed.

Strictly avoid the use of Microwaves (you may refer to my personal experience with them in the section of my site concerning Acne)-the source of information on this is issued at the end of Chapter 13 in the downloadable e-book, but for a brief overview of this topic the balancing of specific foods is not the only important aspect of a healthy diet, but as important is the manner in which the foods are cooked.

Other things to avoid are excessively cold drinks, excessive exposure to cold, air-conditioning, heaters (without the use of humidifiers and a cracked window for fresh air during winter times-Hint: sleep closer to the cracked window, while I lived in Minneapolis, MN for two years that was my trick to ensure I was properly ventilated at night), fans etc.

Also, avoid at all costs eating conventional fruits they are loaded with disease forming pesticides and sprays that upon consumption wreak havoc on the respiratory organs, take it from this author, I learned this the hard way!

Home Toxicity - Your Fatality In A Spray Bottle - Can - Box - Bought From Your Local Store

I was watching an Earth Day Episode from the Oprah Winfrey show where she featured a couple of guests and tips. The one portion of the show that caught my attention was the story of a boy named Spencer, who could be between 3-5 years of age. A normal healthy kid, he had suddenly been struggling with a respiratory illness. His parents brought him to the

Emergency ward and they were asked to leave him there as the doctors needed to do a diagnosis. What they came up shocked his parents. He had asthma.

The mother of the Spencer couldn't believe it. She and her husband did their research of both sides of the family and couldn't find one trace of asthma in their tree. So they ruled out the possibility that it was genetic. Their second part of their research was what he might have ate, or if there was anything external. According to the doctor, when asked, it turned out that SPencer had a couple of toxins in his bloodstream and respiratory system.

The doctor concluded that these toxins were the same kind that are used in Bathroom, Kitchen, Window, oven cleaners. The parents were shocked. So they started on their quest to find healthier counterparts to the toxic products that they had in their home. They later found the products they needed and got rid of all the toxic counterparts.

When Spencer came home, that would be the last time he would have to visit the hospital for now (he hasn't visited it since his parents switched brands.) It would also be the first time that he would not have to use a Ventolin inhaler (for asthma sufferers) and the beginning of a healthy lifestyle.

The marketplace is full of products that are called "Lying Cleaners", where they mention phrases such as "April fresh scent" or "Lemon Fresh Scent", "Non-Static Cling", "clean windows as clear as day" and so forth. These products are supposed to clean or handle the jobs that we put them through, yet, is it ever clean? If clean means tackling a job and leaving something dangerous behind, then we have to change the definition of clean. I just said that sarcastically.

A Cleaner's job is to take on the task of removing what is dirty or harmful - period. But store-bought cleaners are not actually cleaners, are they?

Nature's natural cleaner is water. Before the INdustrial age came around, water was just about as clean as clean could get. It had no toxins (unlike today), and even if we used it as bath or toilet water like back in the agrarian age, it was still clean because it also provided an environment for natural enzymes to help clean the water.

So why do we all have these toxic cleaners? One reason is because we have all these complex things. The other is the possibility of an economic controversy as well. If people do not get sick, there is no business. Think about it.

Since the Industrial Age, Cancer and complex illnesses are at an all-time high. Salmonella has been around forever, yet we hear about it as a super-bug. Why? Because our immune systems are depleting. How? A large portion of it has to do with environment; the other is what we're putting in our mouth.

THere is a saying that if the environment is not healthy, we won't be healthy either. How is that possible? We all need to eat and drink. Yet, if we pollute our atmosphere and environment, all of those toxins find their way into our vegetation, our water, even our meat (the livestock will eat that same vegetation in the same atmosphere.)

So what can we do to clean our homes and still keep it and the environment healthy as possible? Plenty and here's some economical ways too..

First of all, consider cleaners that biodegrade within less than 7 days. Many on the market do not have this capability. The cleaners must be friendly to your health and to the environment. Secondly, consider purifying your tap water, which is contaminated when it goes through your pipeline. You don't want to have those extra toxins right?

An air purifyer is very important if you'd like to get that bio-toxic mold off your walls. If you use bleach, it would kill it in the short term, but your health is affected. When the mold comes back, your immune system will be so low that you won't be able to shake off it's effects.

For Cleaning Ovens, consider a product that uses volcanic ash in a paste form. This is much safer and has no corrosive or poisonous airborne chemicals.

If you're really concerned about the safety of your home in terms of its environment, it's worth looking into a taking action. Do your due diligence and learn as much as you can. You don't want to wake up one morning to learn that you can't breathe well!

How to Raise a Kid with Asthma (Part 1)

Besides you as parents, their siblings and friends, kids may love toys, play and. . .food perhaps the most. I know I did. Another thing I know from experience is some forms of play and food are factors that can trigger an asthma attack.

Boy, was it sad being told when I had my first attack as a kid that I'd have to stay indoors most of the time or I couldn't eat my favorite foods, so I can empathize with any kid who is going through the same thing. But at this point, as an adult, I can also empathize with any parent who has to raise a kid with asthma.

Just how do you go about doing that?

It goes without saying that at times what may be the best for our kids is not what they may want simply because they just don't understand. Now when, it comes to laying strict rules for children to prevent asthma attacks, it sometimes may cause friction between a parent and a child.

That considered, try to do the following:

Sit with the child and have a heart to heart talk with them about their health 'challenge' and why extra care has to be taken to not aggravate its symptoms.

You may have to be creative in explaining to them why they have such a disease as asthma in the first place, however with the tips I will provide you, (God, I wish someone told my parents of this in my childhood. . .), you and your child may perhaps altogether curb the asthma problems.

First, change the child's diet. This might require a little bit of creativity here parents, because my suggestion for a diet for natural asthma treatment involves giving up all processed foods and animal products such as meat, milk, eggs and the like from your diet-plain and simple. These are mucus forming foods and we all know what one physical characteristic of asthma symptoms are: Mucus.

This is a fact that has been in effect in several programs aimed at correcting respiratory health such as the "Breath Retaining Program for Asthmatics" developed by the Russian, Dr. Buteyko. Within weeks of adhering to his advice, many a chronic asthmatic has been able to give up the use of Ventolin inhalers.

Replace these items with mucus binding or non-mucus forming foods. These are quite simply fruits and vegetables. Make sure they are organic if possible or at least not in the list of the "dirty dozen" i.e. the ones most contaminated with pesticides such as Apples, Mexican Melons, Grapes etc. . .

Trust me on this; I'm speaking from experience, you will do very well to avoid the fruits in that list when it comes to asthma. Nonetheless you'd still be much better off steering clear of those food substances labeled as mucus-forming earlier on.

In addition, from my own experience, DO NOT CONSUME LIQUIDS WITH YOUR MEALS AT ANY TIME. This inhibits digestion by diluting the necessary juices in your stomach designated for that purpose. As a result, it hinders the much needed expansion of the diaphragm and consequently a constriction of the lungs- the bellows of life giving air- which results in the wheezing sounds any asthma patient is familiar with.

Now, for kids, it surprisingly may not be too hard, however if need be, you may firmly, but lovingly have to put your foot down and say they can't have the substances mentioned. You can explain why, kids listen. In addition, when kids see you eat the same things, they more than likely will follow suit. This in turn of course will help the whole family.

Besides kids love fruits, now vegetables, that's another thing admittedly-but there are fun ways you can incorporate vegetables into your kid's diet.

For example, you could juice a stalk of celery and add it to some fresh apple juice made by a juicer (if you are so inclined); you could blend it into a smoothie of bananas, dates and young coconuts. . . (Now this tastes good!), or you could simply bake some sweet potatoes or yams and have them with mashed and lightly salted avocadoes (just be sure its uniodized sea-salt). . .that would work. Trust me, I have a sweet tooth and I know what tastes good.

You can also try salads with home made dressings made of simply blending avocadoes, a dash of un-iodized sea-salt and fresh tomatoes. These are all ways that I 'sneak' veggies into my personal diet.

Obviously, I've written a lot about diet here in regards to asthma treatment and your kids. That's because it's arguably the most important factor. I will go over the rest in part 2 of this article and it is with hope that this will lay the foundation for a successful asthma treatment regimen for you kid naturally.

There's Help for Asthma in Yoga

Perhaps it was predestined that I should have had asthma as a kid, discover Yoga as an adult, correct my respiratory health with it and now be blessed to write about my experiences with using Yoga (amongst other things) to control my asthma symptoms.

If this is the case, then I am honored. Either way it goes, I can say with much confidence that based on my experiences, one helpful exercise for alleviating Asthma symptoms and dealing with its many inconveniences is Yoga.

Owing to its gentle poses and stretches and the deep breathing involved in Yoga, certain poses-when used correctly-can be very helpful for smoothening the chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways) that causes swelling and narrowing (constriction) of the airways as is the case in Asthma patients.

Furthermore, when using Yoga as an exercise for asthma control, one need not worry about the common exercise-induced asthma attacks that may come as a result of vigorous activity as these poses are very calm and involve very little motion. . .hey, it's Yoga after all.

The Shoulder Stand & It's Counter Poses for Asthma

Inversion poses in yoga drain excess mucus from the lungs and balance the immune system. Now, let me introduce you to perhaps the simplest of these poses, the shoulder stand pose.

Although the Shoulder-Stand has been coined by several Yoga sages as a near panacea or cure-all, as far as Asthma is concerned, it is indeed very helpful in regards to relieving excess encumbrances in the respiratory organs and owing to its deep breathing, it increases the lung's airflow, capacity, stamina and efficiency.

Here comes the best part, its counter poses. You see, some yoga poses, owing to the execution of them that is, have to be offset by a pose in an opposite spinal direction (another subject, but hopefully you get the gist).

Now friends, this Shoulder-stand pose has 2 main counter-poses: the Bridge and the Fish Poses. (No worries they are very simple to perform.) Both of these poses are back bending postures that open up the chest improving both lung and heart functioning.

There are other poses such as the forward bends which you can practice specifically if it is more difficult to inhale. These include the Head-knee Pose (Passchimothanasa) and it basically involves grabbing your toes, ankles or feet with the head lowered as far as possible to touch the knees.

Now, friends, remember I mentioned counter-poses right? Well, for this particular pose, its counter-poses basically are backward bending poses that include the Incline Pose and Bow Pose.

Both of these (especially the latter) open up the chest and should be practiced to aid with exhaling during asthma attacks.

Last, but not least is the simple, yet extremely effective Relaxation Pose.

Yes, you guessed it right, just simply lie flat on your back and breathe in a controlled and rhythmic pattern. By practicing rhythmic, controlled breathing techniques daily, the respiratory muscles and lungs develop the ability to breathe more slowly all the time, meaning less stress on the airways in general.

In addition to these poses, let me briefly mention the 'Bellow's breath exercise' (a yoga breathing exercise) as this helps tremendously. As the name may suggest, it involves purposely pumping the stomach in an inward motion and exhaling through the nose simultaneously in controlled movements. This removes spasms and tones up the respiratory system significantly.

At this point, it must be mentioned that Yoga does call for a healthy diet in its use and

as a physical and spiritual system; it does call for a mostly vegetarian diet.

Friends, for asthma problems, you may want to strongly consider this as giving up all processed foods and animal products such as meat, milk, eggs and the like from your diet is a must and a fact that has been in effect in several programs aimed at correcting respiratory health such as the "Breath Retaining Program For Asthmatics" developed by the Russian, Dr. Buteyko. Within weeks of adhering to this advice, many a chronic asthmatic has been able to give up the use of Ventolin inhalers.

With all the kissing, embracing, sensuous motions and the climaxing involved, sex does involve a lot of heavy breathing. This, as enjoyable as it may be, does dry out the airway passages and if one partner in a love-making session is asthmatic, sadly this could aggravate an attack. . .and, well end the fun stuff.

So what's a couple to do?

There are specific yoga poses that target asthma owing to the effect of their positioning in regards to the airway passages. They include the Shoulder Stand Poses, The Fish Pose, the Head to Knee Pose and the Bow Pose. They are all very, very simple and it just dawned on me that each of these co-incidentally is useful for toning the organs used for sex!

Yoga's Sun Salutations are also very useful for correcting breathing, mildly exercising the entire body and restoring flexibility and fitness. (Need I mention these are two factors needed for love-making?)

For simple calisthenics, you can look into doing some reps of Hindu Squats and Hindu Push-ups. Both are extremely effective for attaining improved breath control and are total body workouts into themselves. Just don't worry about doing too many of them, if they are demanding, you can do fine with the yoga mentioned and of course you don't have to count out walking, dancing and hiking. (This is in the hopes that your dietetic habits are changed as suggested.)

Other simple steps to curb the effect of Asthma in your love life are to:

1. Avoid excessive temperature changes

2. Ensure dust mites are reduced as much as possible in your home

3. Use a humidifier in the cold seasons.

4. Of course, not have sex right after meals. . .(not even about asthma here folks)

5. Keep fresh air circulating in the rooms at home as much as possible.

Things may not change overnight, nothing that drastic does; however, with these simple steps, in a short time, being hindered by asthma in regards to expressing love through sex will be a thing in the distant past.

Say Goodnight to Insomnia

Do you sometimes feel that you have sleep deprivation? Is the quality of your sleep what it should be or do you wake up feeling tired and lacking energy? In addition, do you have trouble concentrating and just not feeling up to par the rest of the day?

According to the World Health Organization, one third of the world's population experience insomnia at some point in their life. Of that one third, about five per cent need medical treatment.

Below are natural techniques and remedies that can help you sleep without the aid of medical intervention.

Before going to bed, take the time to just sit and relax. Listed to some soft music, and do some deep breathing exercises. It is also best to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine.

Developing a bedtime routine every evening will eventually associate the routine with sleep. For instance, you could start with a cup of hot milk every evening and a warm bath. Milk contains a protein called tryptophan, which helps to promote sleep. A warm bath or shower will lower your internal body temperature again telling your body that it is time for sleep. If hot milk is not for you, try chamomile tea, which is known to calm the nerves.

Watching TV, reading and eating in your bedroom does not promote sleep, thus your body will not associate your bedroom with sleep. Your bedroom should be dark and cozy room that makes you feel secure and comfortable. The bedroom should make you crave sleep.

It is difficult to sleep when you mind is full of things that you have to do tomorrow. In order to alleviate this, write a to-do list for the next day. Organize your clothes for the morning and prepare lunches the night before. Consider making your appointments a little later in the day if you have a tendency to worry about getting up in the morning.

Many of us have anxieties and regrets or events from the past that may still haunt us. Issues such as these affect are sleeping patterns. Whatever the issues are, today might be a good time to finally set things straight; forgive that person, forgive yourself, give back that item, start talking to that family member again (or even make that appointment to see a psychologist if necessary).

In addition, you can organize your life and chores, thus making the time for a good nights sleep. For instance, make one large supper and freeze half for another day, spot clean the house and pick up daily before it becomes a large task, plan a menu for the week thus alleviating the frustration of what to cook for supper every night. You owe it to your health and those around you to get a good night sleep. With a little bit of planning and routine, you will get to bed earlier and get the sleep you need.

As always, a balanced diet makes a balanced mind. While you are planning your menus for the week take into account that the meals you are preparing have the essential vitamins and minerals. Next, throw away all the junk food, pop and other foods that are loaded with calories but offer no nutritional value. Throw in a little exercise and your insomnia will gradually fade away with an improved mind and body.

If you cannot sleep, then get up. Laying in bed worrying that you cannot fall asleep will only make it worse. Get up, go into a different room, and do something to distract yourself until you feel sleepy.

Many medications will interfere with your sleep. Check with your doctor if you are experiencing insomnia and are also taking any of these medications - amphetamines (diet pills), antidepressants, beta blockers (heart and blood pressure), cimetidine (ulcers), clonidine (blood pressure), cortisone, diuretics (fluid), levodopa (parkinsons), methyldopa (blood pressure) and Ventolin (asthma).

Stress is above all the worst cause of insomnia. By using the techniques above you can reduce stress and say goodbye to insomnia.

It's Been Six Years Since My Last Asthma Attack

Characterized by wheezing sounds, tightness in the chest, difficulties breathing and at times cough spells and sore throats, I had my first asthma attack as a kid and up until about 6 years ago had these attacks rather frequently.

I was told my asthma problems had no cure in sight for it, and I believed this up until several years back, but now I cannot help but be grateful to have discovered ways of controlling my asthma and am even more honored to share the tips with you.

First, change your diet.

Yoga has been labeled as a therapeutic near-panacea for a plethora of human ailments and incidentally, even asthma victims and patients may be able to receive immense benefits from this ancient exercise.

Based on my experiences, one helpful exercise for alleviating Asthma symptoms and dealing with its many inconveniences is Yoga.

Taking into consideration its gentle poses and stretches and the deep breathing involved in Yoga, certain poses-when used correctly-can be very helpful for smoothening the chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways) that causes swelling and narrowing (constriction) of the airways as is the case in Asthma patients.

In addition to the benefit above, it must be mentioned that when using yoga in a natural asthma control regimen, one need not worry about the common exercise-induced asthma attacks that may come as a result of vigorous activity as these poses are very calm and involve very little motion.

Based on my research, experience and practice, the following poses will definitely be stand-outs in aiding asthma victims in controlling and correcting their respiratory health.

-The Shoulder-Stand
